The story of this song was completely lifted from the life of Johnny Paul Nolan, our friend Calida's dad. Seems ol' John had a dream of opening up a bar so he didn't have to drive to hear (and make) music and carry on with his friends. He had grand dreams of making it the Luchenbach of South Texas, and in the early days folks all thought that Willie just might roll up in the Honeysuckle Rose at any moment. If you're ever near South Padre, TX, look up my friends:

(Sidebar: Elzie gave me the line, "For a man with nothing much to do, he didn't have time for much of anything" . . . It was about her dad, Gene Ivey. I'm sure he and Johnny Nolan would've gotten along famously.)
