We did a short run of CDs because some folks like to hold things in their hands, so if you're one of them, don't be a jabroni, giving your dollars to iTunes or Amazon--order straight from the source! I usually throw in some extra goodies whenever someone orders.

about

I wrote and recorded these songs in 2014. The most direct inspiration for writing them was that I was on deadline--the artificial, self-given type. I joined a songwriter group that kicked me in the pants on a weekly basis, giving my songwriting the same structured discipline that I once learned as a journalist and failed to cultivate as a writer of fiction. I've always thrived working against the clock but had resisted applying this to songwriting for some unearthly reason. It finally just made sense to me to try it, and the opportunity presented itself when my San Antonio buddy Jason Trevino invited me to join his group.

The deadlines sometimes led me inward, and I did face some demons directly in a few of these tunes. Other times, the deadlines freed me to be whimsical and experiment. I'm finding great liberation in story songs, in particular, and I expect to head more in that direction as I come to better grips with (and get ever sicker of writing about) myself.

My deep love and thanks to Kris Brown, Sara Shansky, Amy Blackard, and Elizabeth Ivey for their great contributions to some of these tracks (the better ones, I think). Mostly, I want to thank them for being such amazing friends (and, in Elzie's case, wife / partner / mentor / hand-holder. . .)

As always, my love and appreciation overflows for anyone listening in and digging what I'm doing as I continue to mark the time with these rhymes.

This one's for Gene and Vickie Ivey, whom we miss every day.
